Advice For Thin Hair Peeps
In a world where we are bombarded with images of models with luscious locks and a voluminous extravaganza, thin hair peeps may be feeling left out and defeated. Thin hair can be tricky to maintain but there is hope!
First lets start with your diet. I know you hear it time and time again but of course it is true- you are what you eat. Your body and hair are not mutually exclusive; the minerals, vitamins, and other nutrients needed for a strong and healthy body are also essential for strong and healthy hair. The last thing fine hair folk want is to lose hair or have it break off! A diet rich in proteins and leafy green vegetables are important in keeping your hair strong and less susceptible to breakage.
“To a doctor,” says dermatologist Amy McMichael, MD, “healthy hair is hair that’s growing appropriately out of every follicle, not easily broken, and connected to a healthy scalp…. it’s hair that’s as long and full as you’d like it to be. It’s bouncy, shiny, and manageable.” So there you have it; a vitamin and protein rich diet will keep your hair healthy and on your head!
Another way to maximize thin hair is to choose a hairstyle that creates the look and feel of volume. Chin length bobs add fullness for thin hair because it releases all the weight at the bottom and adds upward volume.
The illusion of color is another way to add fullness because it actually changes the texture of fine hair. At Casa di Menotti we use BES hair color products, which uses a smaller bead molecule to deposit the color into the cuticle. In my opinion, BES hair color is the leader in the industry. BES color has a reflective quality and creates the illusion of volume. Above all, always choose a professional hair stylist to work with you to help you make the best decisions for your hair and unique look.
Another quandary for peeps with fine hair is choosing the right shampoos and styling products. When a person with fine hair uses the wrong hair products, it can weigh the hair down and leave it feeling lifeless and limp. Lightweight gels and mousses are the best choices for styling. Here at Casa di Menotti we use the Silkat Nutritivo shampoo and conditioner, which is a hair care line that is lightweight and nourishing for fine hair. To get the best results from these products, it is best to massage the shampoo into your scalp and work it through the ends of the hair. Leave it for two minutes and then thoroughly rinse. Once you are finished with your shower, squeeze out the water from your hair and section it into four pieces. Take a dime size amount of Silkat Nutritivo N2 Conditioner; (even less if you have short hair) and work it through the ends of the hair in each section. Then group the sections together and run your hands over the ends. This allows for an even distribution of the conditioner. Try to avoid the scalp area because this is a leave in conditioner. I had been skeptical of leave-in conditioner up until I used this product. It is remarkable how it never leaves the hair feeling or looking greasy.
When styling fine hair be gentle! Towel dry your hair and use a wide tooth comb to gently comb the hair from the ends up to the scalp. When starting at the ends you will avoid breaking the hair at the root and accidently creating breakage. Use a big round brush when blowing out your hair, lifting at the roots to create volume and fullness. Avoid excessive heat styling because that can break and damage fine hair. Pomade and texturizing cream can add some extra definition. Try flipping your head upside down and spraying the hair with hairspray; when you stand up style the pieces as you desire.
